Lower Falls in Johnston Canyon

One of the first hiking trails you come to when entering Banff National Park (coming from Calgary) is Johnston Canyon. The entire trail is about 6 miles and passes several waterfalls on the way.

The picture below is the Lower Falls, the first of the waterfalls you get to and it is an easy walk. As the hike continues, the trail gets a bit more rugged.

As you can see, the Lower Falls plunges into this giant pothole, a cauldron of swirling water with amazing colors. There is bridge and cave you can walk through to get closer to the falls, providing you don’t mind getting wet! Not something I’d try with a camera, regardless of the weather sealing.

Again, this is an HDR blending 3 exposures taken at 1.5 stops apart.

Emerald Lake

West of Banff National Park, just across the state border in British Columbia lies Yoho National Park with a glorious lake called Emerald Lake. Surrounded by some of the most magnificent mountain scenery I have ever seen, this lake seems to epitomize everything you’d expect from a clear mountain lake. Crystal clear water, awesome views, clean air, and soul-soothing peace and quiet.

This shot is an HDR comprising 3 exposures.

I hope to go back one day, ideally in another season (this was taken in late May).
